Risk vs. Reward

While the need to upgrade our energy infrastructure is undeniable, the deployment of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) must be approached with caution. These systems, while essential for grid stability and renewable energy integration, pose significant safety risks due to the potential for thermal runaway—a hazardous chain reaction that can lead to intense fires, toxic gas emissions, and explosions. Unlike conventional fires, BESS incidents are notoriously difficult to control, often requiring extensive emergency response efforts and posing serious health and environmental risks. Placing these facilities near homes, schools, or sensitive ecological areas magnifies the danger, endangering communities and fragile ecosystems. To ensure public safety and environmental protection, it is imperative that BESS installations are sited in locations that minimize risk, far from densely populated and environmentally vulnerable areas.

what can you do?

In Washington state, the final decision on many of these proposed sites rest solely with the governor, regardless of local regulations or the wishes of the public who will be affected by an emergency, which are becoming more and more common as we learn more about this relatively new and untested technology.
